Julie's Cake in a Box

covering Beverley, East Yorkshire and surrounding area

Hi, I am Julie Rogerson of Julie’s Cake in a Box, based in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

I make wedding and celebration cakes, particularly carved/novelty cakes with models. I teach beginners cake decorating classes locally and I am training to be an Accredited Demonstrator for the British Sugarcraft Guild. I love the variety – no two cakes are the same! I also enjoy the creativity of making cakes and meeting students to share my knowledge.

I love the supportiveness and community spirit of the industry, the way people from all around the world come together for a shared love of cake and sugarcraft. As a teacher, I enjoy sharing my skills and knowledge in a relaxed, friendly environment, which is what attracted me to join Cake Minds as this is echoed in their approach to teaching. I want to able to create small communities of like minded people locally, sharing my knowledge and skills to help others learn the art of sugarcraft. And with that meet new people and make new friends, with a shared interest in cake decorating.

Sugarcrafting has helped me to build confidence and self belief in myself. I have always been a very shy person, but since starting on my cake journey, I have pushed myself to step outside of my comfort zone, achieving things I never thought possible, like demonstrating in front of live audiences and on FB live events. I have gained so many new friends along the way too!

I started competing at Cake International in 2016 where I have won Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for my entries in the Large Decorative and Small Decorative categories. I have also taken part in a number of collaborations and displays at the show, as well as being a part of The Three Sugartiers, competing in the Cake Off semi final in 2018 and the two day Live Championship in 2019. I am most proud of my first Gold award winning piece, made for Cake International in Spring 2017. It was a lifesize bust of The Night King (Game of Thrones). This was my largest piece I had ever done at this point, and I really pushed myself to the limit whilst making it. I have also taken part in feature displays at the shows, including pieces for a Roald Dahl themed display, interactive Christmas Grotto and both Pirate and Witch themed exhibits.

I write tutorials for Cake Decoration and Sugarcraft magazine, am a guest tutor at Pretty Witty Academy and have had tutorials published in Cake Masters Magazine and Cake International Magazine. I was a semi finalist in the Baking Industry Awards for the Celebration Cake Business of the Year 2019.

I started running my business in 2013, around my full time job as a Nursery Nurse, until leaving to concentrate on my business full time in July 2018. I have always enjoyed baking with family, but only discovered my love of cake decorating when my children were older and I was looking for a new hobby. I am mostly self-taught, but more recently I have had the opportunity to attend classes with some of the industry’s top cake artists, so I know first hand what it is like to be in a student’s shoes!

Other than sugarcrafting I have a Springer Spaniel called Sandy, who I love to take out on walks in the local countryside. I enjoy reading and sewing when I have time!
