Karens Perfect Slice
Solihull and surrounding area
Hi there, I’m Karen Sheppard of ‘Karen’s Perfect Slice’, based in Solihull, West Midlands.
I create wedding and celebration cakes, sugar-craft flowers and 3D models, and I enjoy experimenting with new cake decorating techniques. I love seeing people’s faces light up when they see (and then eat!) what I make. I have recently completed a PME Professional Diplomas & Masters in Fondant and Sugar-paste, Royal Icing & Piping and Sugar Flower Skills.
As a teacher, I would love to share my passion and knowledge with you in a relaxed and friendly environment. Cake Minds reflects my approach to cake making and so it’s the perfect fit – small classes of like-minded people learning the art of sugar craft.
I first took an interest in cake decorating when my children were young and started making their novelty birthday cakes – Care Bears, Thomas the Tank Engine, princess castles, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – it was the 80’s! Then, one day, my father-in-law offered my cake-making skills to a friend and this resulted in my first wedding cake - 3 tiers, lace detailing and complete with 3D sugar-crafted swans. It was a steep learning curve but I loved it.
I went on to make more complex cakes for friends and family and continued to enjoy it. I had found a hobby that was just for me, one that was creatively fulfilling, that built my confidence and gave me back my independence. So, I took the plunge and enrolled at Halesowen College to complete a City and Guilds in Cake Decorating and Sugar Craft. I was loving it so much that I also enrolled in a Sugar Craft Flower course too! I received a distinction in both.
Following this, I began helping at the cake shop Sugar Surgeons in Lichfield. There I learnt so much from the talented owner, Helen, produced sugar flowers so realistic that they not only were they featured in the trade press but customers would go to smell them! Whilst there I taught a sugar flower class for Helen’s regular customers and made the 10-year anniversary cake for Richard and Judy on This Morning. It even featured on the TV show!
Life took over, I went back to work full time in the skincare industry and my cake-making days stopped. But then my grandchildren came along. I started to bake again and rediscovered all the reasons I loved it – being able to make people happy with beautiful and tasty cakes, the relaxing process and being able to switch off from the everyday.
I have since updated my skills and follow the latest trends and techniques. In the last year I have completed the following courses with some amazing teachers, and now I would love to share what I have learnt with you too.
- 3D Carving & Internal Structures with Paul Bradford, Spain.
- Airbrushing with Cassie Brown, UK
- Cake carving and Modelling with Rose Macfield, UK
Other than cake making and sugar craft, I love spending time with my children and grandchildren... and watching true crime documentaries if I can find a moment!
