Hi I’m Joanna Jarvis, owner and tutor at Heavenly Tiers.

I specialise in creating bespoke novelty cakes for celebrations and weddings and deliver small group cake decoration classes from my home based Cake Studio in Lasswade, Midlothian.

As a keen home baker, my cake journey began when I volunteered to make my sisters wedding cake in 2007. I got the cake bug and attended my local college to learn cake decoration when my son was a baby and went on to make lots of cakes for friends and family.  I set up my business Heavenly Tiers in 2010 on a part time basis whilst I worked as a Community Learning and Development Officer.

In 2011, I started teaching Cake Decoration on behalf of Midlothian Council, Adult Education.  In 2016, I left my role as Youth Charity Project Manager to focus on my cake business full time and completed a Professional Diploma in Patisserie at Edinburgh School of Food and Wine.

My husband and I converted our former 1850’s coach house and garage into cake decoration studio and I began teaching my own studio classes in 2019. I offer beginners cake decoration, skill builders for post beginners and craved novelty cake classes for intermediates.

I also provide private classes for events and demonstrations. For example; chocolate drip cake demonstrations for Foodies Festival in Edinburgh. Cake Decoration day for patisserie students at Edinburgh School of Food and Wine and a Bake Off inspired cake decoration event for Homestore + More.

I became a Cake Minds accredited teacher, as I believe that sugar craft can provide so much more than creating a beautifully decorated cake.  Spending time making art with others in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, gives you that precious time and space to explore your creative side and the opportunity to make friends and connect with others on a regular basis.

I am an affiliate member of Pretty Witty Academy and an individual member of the British Sugarcraft Guild. I am a trainee demonstrator for British Sugarcraft Guild and offer demonstrations in modelling and novelty cakes to Region 1 branches.

When I am not making cakes or teaching. I love to be outside enjoying the garden or walking my Labradoodle Tess with my family.

I look forward to meeting my new Cake Minds students!

Buttercream Skills

Got voucher as a present and I’m so glad that I did! Absolutely loved the class and will book another class in the future.

Buttercream Terrarium

I really enjoyed my experience today. Joanna was extremely helpful and answered any questions I had. Also very friendly. Would definitely come again. Highly recommended.

Mini Cake and Model (Adult & Child)

This particular class would be a lovely experience for families to do a fun activity together that can then be replicated in the home.  My granddaughter said it was really good!

Simple Fondant Celebration Cake

The class covered everything I need to know about the basics of ‘fondanting’ a cake. It has built my confidence for sure.

3D Old Boot Planter Cake

Jo teaches with enthusiasm and it is a joy to attend her classes, as well as taking home a beautiful piece of art.

Wired Flower Spray

Lovely atmosphere at Heavenly Tiers, friendly and nothing is too much for Jo. She clearly enjoys passing on skills. Definitely recommend and will be back for another class.

Absolutely brilliant, highly beneficial! Amazing tips, tricks and skills learned!

Simple Celebration Cake Class

Very relaxed and enjoyable way to spend an evening with new skills being learnt. Smaller group so a much more hands on with the instructor Jo. A very enjoyable experience and learnt that there is a lot more to cake decorating than you think!

Rhu is passionate about her teachers, supporting and enabling them to build their own network of students. Most students are new to Sugarcraft and are cheered on as they pursue their own journeys in this exciting and diverse community, forming lifelong friendships that involve more than just the regular meetings.

Cake Minds aims to build a global network of teachers that offer new skills by bringing together the Sugarcraft community from a virtual platform to a local supportive community near you. Support and advice is offered in a mindful and creative space on a regular basis in small, friendly, informal settings.
