Hi. I’m Gillian Wilson and I run my cake business, Cupcakes by Gillian, from my home in Glasgow, Scotland.

I started my cake business in 2014, after the birth of my third child. I had been a Chartered Accountant for over 20 years and had dabbled in cake decorating for friends and family for a few years, and had always loved baking. My daughter, who was 7 at the time, told me I should sell my cakes! And that’s where it all started!

I started out with cupcakes (hence the business name!), but very quickly diversified into large celebration cakes, and I will have a go at anything cake related! My real passion is sugar modelling.

In 2018 I decided I would take the plunge and start offering cake decorating classes - with a specific focus on sugar modelling. I became a Cake Dutchess instructor in 2018, and have been running Cake Dutchess sugar modelling classes since early 2019 from my cake class studio. I also run cupcake decorating classes, cake pop and cakesicle classes, and offer 1-2-1 sessions for anyone wanting to improve their cake decorating skills.

I have now been running classes for nearly a year - what has become apparent to me is that the ladies who attend my classes, come to learn but also come to share experiences, chat and build friendships with like minded people. My current Cake Dutchess modelling classes run over 3 sessions over a 3 week period and this gives the attendees a chance to get to know each other each week, and build on those relationships. What attracted me to Cake Minds was the chance to take this class format to a new level - running regular classes with the same group of people keen to learn new skills, and form new supportive relationships.

The cake industry is full of fabulous people but it can be lonely working on your own - what I have really enjoyed about running my classes is having like minded people to share my skills with, and build new friendships. My classes have been my therapy over the last year!

I am a member of the British Sugarcraft Guild and Treasurer to the Glasgow branch.

My family is very important to me and running my cake business from home allows me to spend time with my family, husband Alan, and three children, Jaimie, Cammy and Ruaridh. When I’m not doing cake stuff, I love watching Netflix, and occasionally make it to the gym for a game of tennis!
